Not long ago, it wasn't uncommon to observe dog owners tighten up a newspaper to pad their dog's rear end if they misbehaved. Many dog owners tend to think of their furry friends as humans. Sure, they exhibit some of the same characteristics. They show fear, anger, happiness, contentment, and joy.
Still, a dog is not a human. Spanking or hitting them will not correct their behavior.
Why?
Dogs have their own language and communication skills. It's obvious they can't talk, but that doesn't mean they don't communicate.
Consider this for a moment, have you ever witnessed a mom with her puppies? If so, you would notice how she trains her pups. She may pick them up and move them around. She may use verbal noise to express when she's upset. Still, she never gets violent with them.
The fact is, dogs don't spank each other.
When a person hits a dog for correction, they don't identify the negative experience as a means to correct behavior. They don't recognize the act as discipline.
Instead, they experience it as violence.
It doesn't matter how soft or hard you hit the dog. To them, it's an act of aggression.
So, the dog will respond in one of two ways. It will grow fearful of the person acting out violently, or it will react with violence --- i.e., threatening to bite or actually bite to protect itself.
What happens when a dog is given corporal punishment is the exact opposite of what you want. You are destroying respect and trust. Without those two things, you will never have a relationship built to last with the dog. He won't bond with you.
Instead, he'll live in fear and show signs of aggression with those he perceives as a threat.
So, despite one's intent or regardless of how soft or hard one hits, a dog should not be spanked or hit in any way.
There are better ways to get your point across ---- starting with praising them when they do good and working with your dog to create positive experiences that give them reasons to follow your rules.
